The Cincinnati Bengals selected WR Mohamed Sanu with the 83rd overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Sanu is 6’2″, 215 pounds and he runs a 4.55 40. Sanu is a field fast receiver that doesn’t mind mixing it up over the middle of the field. He has a good set of hands as he catches almost everything pass that he touches. Sanu will need to improve as a blocker, but he can get coached up to do that. Sanu played in 13 games (all starts) for Rutgers last year and he caught 115 passes for 1,206 yards (10.5 avg) with 7 TD grabs. He played in 38 games (37 starts) in his three years at Rutgers and he caught 210 passes for 2,263 yards (10.8 avg) with 12 TD grabs. He doesn’t project to be more than a #2 WR for the Bengals, but that’s just fine as they already have A.J. Green.

The Bengals picked CB Dre Kirkpatrick with the #17 overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Kirkpatrick is 6’2″, 190 and he runs a 4.5 40, so he’s a pretty good athlete. He played in 13 games (all starts) for Alabama last year and he had 30 tackles, broke up 9 passes and he forced 2 fumbles. He played in 38 games (25 starts) in his three years with the Crimson Tide and he had 91 tackles, 16 passes broken up, 3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. Kirkpatrick has a huge upside and he was an outstanding special teams player on the coverage teams in college. His only real weakness is that he has gotten into some trouble off the field, including an arrest last January for marijuana possession. So he should fit right in with the rest of the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals used the #3 overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft on QB Akili Smith out of Oregon. Smith got his big chance in 2000 with the Bengals when he played in 12 games (11 starts) in which he completed 118 of 267 passes (44.2%) for 1,253 yards with 3 TD passes and 6 INTs (52.8 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 41 times for 232 yards (5.7 ypc) in 2000 for the Bengals. Smith played in 22 games (17 starts) in his four years with the Bengals and he completed 215 of 461 passes (46.6%) for 2,212 yards with 5 TD passes and 13 INTs (52.8 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 70 times for 371 yards (5.3 ypc) with 1 TD run in his career with the Bengals. Akili Smith was 3-14 (17.6%) as a starting QB for the Bengals. Amazing, Smith is #11 in passing yards (2,212), tied for 16th in TD passes (5) and tied for 10th in interceptions (13) in Bengals’ history. Smith was such a joke as a QB with the Bengals, that no other team took a flier on him after they let him go. Akili Smith is far and away the worst pick the Bengals ever made in the first round.

1. (17) Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

1. (21) Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois

2. (53) Dont’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

3. (83) George Iloka, FS, Boise State

4. (116) Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina

5. (156) Tauren Poole, RB, Tennessee

5. (166) Dan Herron, RB, Ohio State

5. (167) Jaymes Brooks, OG, Virginia Tech

6. (191) Marquis Maze, WR, Alabama
