6. (209) Bernard Scott, RB

The Bengals are at it again drafting a trouble maker.  Scott has been kicked off a high school and college team in his young career.  He has also had numerous run-ins with the police.  Still, the Bengals couldn’t resist taking a flyer on Brown.  He is 5’10″, 200 pounds and runs a 4.56 40.  He rushed for an amazing 4,321 yards and 63 TDs in his last two seasons at Abilene Christian.  He also caught 93 passes for 1,391 yards (15.0 avg) with 10 TD grabs in those two years.  Despite all of those gaudy numbers it will be quite a leap in competition for Scott.  It will be interesting to see if he has a chance to mature or not in the Bengals’ locker room which often resembles a cell block.

6. (179) Morgan Trent, CB

Morgan Trent fell into the 6th round because coaches must have watched his game tape.  He’s about as soft as a roll of charmin agains the run and he’s very raw in coverage.   But, he is 6’1″, 190 pounds and runs a 4.4 40 which likely got him drafted.  Trent played 4 seasons at Michigan covering 48 games (41 starts) in which he made 149 tackles, broke up 16 passes, had 7 interceptions (3 yards) and he recovered 2 fumbles.  He might be able to help out in nickel and dime packages for the Bengals if he starts playing with some heart.  His immediate future is probably on special teams.  Trent is a good athlete but not much of a football player.

5. (142) Kevin Huber, P

The Bengals didn’t have to look to far for the punter of the future as he was sitting in their city playing for the Bearcats.  The left footed Huber played in 30 games in 4 years at Cincinnati and he punted the ball 124 times for 5,636 yards (45.5 avg).  He pinned opposing teams inside their 20-yard line 47 times (37.9%) and he didn’t get blocked even once in college.  The Bengals like Huber so much that they have already cut last year’s starter Kyle Larson.

4. (106) Jonathan Luigs, C

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Bengals Talk,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 5 May 2009 at 9:53 pm

The Bengals drafted for need here as Luigs could be a starter from Day #1.  But, even though he is 6’3″, 302 pounds he’s not a power player.  Still, he’s quick into his blocks and can hit moving targets on the second level of the defense.  He played in 49 games (all starts) at Arkansas in 4 years there and he was a 2-time All-SEC selection.  Another solid pick by the Bengals which is odd.

3. (98) Chase Coffman, TE

The Bengals were ecstatic to see Chase Coffman waiting for them in the 3rd round.  Tight end has been a black hole for the Bengals for quite some time now so Coffman will get every chance to start as a rookie in 2009.  He’s not much of a blocker despite being 6’6″, 244 pounds and he’s not the fastest TE around running a 4.85 40, but, he has a great set of hands and knows how to get open.  Coffman played in 50 games (20 starts) in 4 seasons at Missouri and he caught 247 passes for 2,659 yards (10.8 avg) with 30 TD grabs.  This was a excellent pick for the Bengals.

3. (70) Michael Johnson, DE

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Bengals Talk,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 5 May 2009 at 9:39 pm

The Bengals have been desperate for a pass rush and that’s why they picked Johnson in the third round.  He’s useless against the run but he gets up the field and to the QB.  He’s also very athletic running a 4.65 40 while standing 6’7″, 260 pounds.  Johnson is also adept at blocking kicks and punts which should really boost the special teams of the Bengals.  Johnson played in 49 games (15 starts) at Georgia Tech where he made 107 tackles, 30.5 tackles for a loss, he had 19 sacks, batted down 11 balls, forced 10 fumbles and he recovered 2 fumbles.  This was a solid pick for the Bengals and Johnson might lead them in sacks this season.

2. (48) Ray Maualuga, ILB

The Bengals were ecstatic to see inside linebacker Ray Maualuga fall to them in the 2nd round.  He is a nasty defender who brings the pain to offensive players.  He is 6’1″, 254 pounds and he runs a 4.75 40.  Maualuga owns the tackle box as he is not shy about mixing it up with linemen on the way to tackling through the running back.  He played in 50 games (36 starts) in 4 years at USC and he made 293 tackles, had 22.5 tackles for a loss, 9 sacks, broke up 12 passes and he had 5 interceptions.  This was a outstanding pick for the Bengals as Maualuga will bring intensity to the defense from day #1.
