Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Bengals Talk,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 7 September 2007 at 8:53 pm
It’s time for the Ravens yearly trip to the Jungle in Cincinnati where they haven’t fared too well lately.  Still, the Ravens back down from no one with the awesome defense they have.  Look for the Bengals to attempt to power the ball on the ground and to throw the ball down the field to their WRs.  The Bengals will likely run a lot to the right side behind RG Bobbie Williams and RT Willie Anderson.  Rudi Johnson will find the yards tough against NT Kelly Gregg and ILBs Bart Scott and Ray Lewis.  OLB Terrell Suggs and LDE Trevor Pryce will be bringing the heat on the pass rush so Carson Palmer may have to throw the football quickly.  WRs Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are both tough and will come back to the football.  But, CB Chris McAllister is one of the best corners in the NFL so look for the Bengals to attack CB Samari Rolle on the other side as he is starting to slide.

The Ravens will likely attack the Bengals on the ground with Willis McGahee running behind C Mike Flynn, LG Jason Brown and LT Jonathan Ogden.  Look for DE Justin Smith to try to screw up that plan as he rushes the passer well and defends the run with equal vigor.  If the Ravens offensive line gives QB Steve McNair time to throw the Bengals might be in trouble.  WRs Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams will be a handful for CBs Deltha O’Neal and Johnathan Joseph.  Safeties Madieu Williams and Dexter Jackson will also have their hands full with TE Todd Heap who has an incredible set of hands.

PREDICTION:  I like the Bengals to defend their turf in a game that will be higher scoring than most people think.

The Cincinnati Bengals release RB Quincy Wilson

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Bengals News,Front Page,General Bengals Talk by dawgpounded on Wednesday 5 September 2007 at 5:24 pm

The Cincinnati Bengals have released running back Quincy Wilson despite him having a decent pre-season.  Wilson carried the football 22 times for 75 yards (3.4 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 5 passes for 50 yards (10.0 avg).  The Bengals got rid of him because he lacked field vision but that makes no sense based on his production in the pre-season.

The Cincinnati Bengals claim three players off of waivers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Bengals News,Front Page,General Bengals Talk by dawgpounded on Wednesday 5 September 2007 at 5:14 pm

The Bengals have claimed RB Clifton Dawson (Colts), CB David Jones (Saints) and LB Anthony Schlegel (Jets).  Clifton Dawson will likely be the #3 RB on the Bengals this season.  He played decent for the Colts in the pre-season and he carried the football 12 times for 48 yards (4.0 ypc) and he also caught 1 pass for 4 yards.  CB David Jones is a super fast rookie corner who had 7 tackles and 1 interception for the Saints in the pre-season.  He will help the Bengals this season.  Linebacker Anthony Schlegel was a homer pick-up as he played at Ohio State in college.  He had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery in the pre-season with the Jets which is much better than he played as a rookie.  In his rookie season with Jets he played in 4 games and made 1 whole tackle.

The Cincinnati Bengals cut QB Doug Johnson

The Bengals have released Doug Johnson.  The Bengals gave Johnson a chance to earn the backup job before trading for Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Rams.  But Johnson did not play well in the pre-season.  He completed 39 of 68 passes (57.4%) for 407 yards with 2 TD passes and 4 INTs (60.1 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 4 times for 3 yards (0.8 ypc).  Johnson is running out of chances in the NFL so he will need to step up when he gets his next chance.

The Cincinnati Bengals acquire QB Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Rams

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking Bengals News,Front Page,General Bengals Talk by dawgpounded on Tuesday 4 September 2007 at 7:30 pm

The Bengals have traded a 7th round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft to the Rams for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick who will be the Bengals #2 QB behind Carson Palmer.  Fitzpatrick played decent in the pre-season for the Rams as he completed 28 of 44 passes (63.6%) for 249 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 interceptions (67.3 QB Rating).  He also ran the ball 8 times for 56 yards (7.0 ypc).  Fitzpatrick has played in 5 regular season games in his NFL career and he has completed 76 of 135 passes (56.3%) for 777 yards with 4 TD passes and 8 interceptions (58.2 QB Rating).  He also has run the ball 17 times for 64 yards (3.8 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  Fitzpatrick isn’t a great player by any means but he is better than Doug Johnson without a doubt so this was a good trade for the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals 14, Indianapolis Colts 6

The Bengals were pretty fortunate to win this game on Friday Night based on how they played.  Doug Johnson started the game at QB and he was 9 of 14 passing the ball for 69 yards with 2 interceptions.  Rookie Jeff Rowe finished the game completing 7 of 14 passes for 54 yards with 1 interception.  Quincy Wilson really played well for the Bengals as he carried the football 11 times for 47 yards (4.3 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 3 passes for 31 yards.  Curtis Brown (10 car, 43 yards) and Kenny Watson (8 car, 36 yards) were also both busy against the Colts.  WR Chris Henry caught 4 passes for 21 yards in his last game for at least 2 months.  The Bengals finished with 134 yards rushing on 31 carries (4.3 ypc) and they completed 16 of 28 passes for 107 yards.

The Bengals defense outscored the Colts’ offense 7-6 as LB Caleb Miller returned a fumble 46 yards for a TD.  The Colts ran the ball 19 times for 85 yards (4.5 ypc) and they completed 31 of 54 passes for 288 yards.
